The Battle of Flamborough Head (23 September 1779) was a significant naval battle of the North Yorkshire Coast during the American revolution. A US/French squadron led by John Paul Jones aboard Bonhomme Richard captured the British frigate HMS Serapis after intense, close-quarters fighting, despite the Bonhomme Richard sinking. While a huge morale boost for the US, the British successfully saved the merchant convoy they were defending.

At one stage Jone’s vessel , badly damaged and on fire, the British captain of the Serapis, offered Jone’s a ceasefire so his crew could be saved. Jone’s reply was ” Sir I have not yet begun to fight”.
