“Reiver’s Moon” by Kevin Nutter

£3.25£825.00

Original acrylic painting on 18mm frame canvas wrap.

Border Reivers, returning to Scotland with rustled cattle,

The painting shows Rockcliffe Marsh, Eden estuary, Solway Firth, circa 1580. The band are droving the cattle across the low tide back to Scotland, hoping to avoid the pursuing English posse on the “Hot Trod”.

Reivers were from all backgrounds from labourers to peers of the realm. they were natural horsemen and skilled guerrilla soldiers, practising kidnapping ,blackmail and murder. Reivers give us the word bereaved, to “be reived”.
