“The Sands & Eden Bridges” By Kevin Nutter.

The Sands & Eden bridges , Carlisle, circa 1790

The “Sands” were originally an island in the River Eden adjacent to Stanwix Bank and two bridges were built to span the channels.

In the painting the prominent positions of the Cathedral and Castle within the old city walls are apparent and also showing is the Edinburgh mail coach crossing from Stanwix Bank.
